font-size: 20px; font-weight: 600; margin: 24px 0px 12px; text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 0px rgb(0, 29, 53);\">Bernardo O&#8217;Higgins Riquelme (1778-1842)<\/h3>\n<p>Bernardo O&#8217;Higgins Riquelme es considerado el padre de la patria. Su presencia, como militar y gobernante, fue crucial en todo el proceso de <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-692.html\">emancipaci\u00f3n chilena<\/a> del dominio espa\u00f1ol, ya fuera luchando en las batallas de la Independencia o ejerciendo como primer Director Supremo de la nueva naci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>Hijo natural del que fuera gobernador de Chile y virrey del Per\u00fa, Ambrosio O\u00b4Higgins, naci\u00f3 el 20 de agosto de 1778, en Chill\u00e1n Viejo. Realiz\u00f3 sus estudios en Lima y luego en Inglaterra, donde conoci\u00f3 a Francisco Miranda, quien lo inici\u00f3 en las ideas independentistas. Muerto su padre en 1801, regres\u00f3 a Chile a tomar posesi\u00f3n de la hacienda de Las Canteras cercana a la ciudad de Los \u00c1ngeles.<\/p>\n<p>En 1810, fue elegido diputado de la reci\u00e9n formada <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-593.html\">Junta de Gobierno<\/a> y nombrado coronel de ej\u00e9rcito en 1811. En 1813, se enfrent\u00f3 por primera vez a los realistas en la batalla de El Roble. Su rivalidad con <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-3480.html\">Jos\u00e9 Miguel Carrera<\/a>, el otro l\u00edder de la Independencia, la llev\u00f3 a enfrentarse, en 1814, en el combate de Tres Acequias. No obstante su esp\u00edritu patriota prim\u00f3 y O&#8217;Higgins se uni\u00f3 a Carrera para enfrentar la invasi\u00f3n de las <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-3671.html\">fuerzas realistas<\/a> dirigidas por Mariano Osorio.<\/p>\n<p>Durante el per\u00edodo de la Reconquista, organiz\u00f3 en Mendoza, junto a Jos\u00e9 de San Mart\u00edn, el <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-3383.html\">Ej\u00e9rcito Libertador de Los Andes<\/a> y dirigi\u00f3 la ofensiva chilena. Derrotadas las fuerzas realistas, asumi\u00f3 como Director Supremo y firm\u00f3, el 12 de febrero de 1818, la Proclamaci\u00f3n de la Independencia de Chile. En algunas de las proclamas dirigidas por O&#8217;Higgins a los soldados enemigos que a\u00fan resist\u00edan, dej\u00f3 claramente establecida su posici\u00f3n antimon\u00e1rquica. Sin embargo, su af\u00e1n por incrementar el desarrollo econ\u00f3mico del pa\u00eds, lo impuls\u00f3 a establecer relaciones comerciales con las principales monarqu\u00edas europeas; las cartas enviadas a los reyes, escritas en un lenguaje equilibrado y cauteloso, quedaron para la posteridad como un testimonio de su car\u00e1cter eminentemente pragm\u00e1tico.<\/p>\n<p>Entre las obras de su gobierno, tuvo especial relevancia la construcci\u00f3n de escuelas primarias, la reapertura del <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-651.html\">Instituto Nacional<\/a> y la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-674.html\">Biblioteca Nacional<\/a>, adem\u00e1s de la creaci\u00f3n de la Escuela Militar. En su gesti\u00f3n como Director Supremo tom\u00f3 medidas que le significaron ganarse la antipat\u00eda de la aristocracia criolla, como la abolici\u00f3n de los mayorazgos y los t\u00edtulos de nobleza, la supresi\u00f3n de los escudos de armas y la creaci\u00f3n de la legi\u00f3n al m\u00e9rito. En estas disposiciones puede observarse la influencia de la <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-3570.html\">logia mas\u00f3nica Lautarina<\/a> -a la que O&#8217;Higgins pertenec\u00eda-, que se caracterizaba por su rechazo al orden nobiliario.<\/p>\n<p>Su gloriosa vida p\u00fablica -aunque no desprovista de episodios oscuros, como su participaci\u00f3n en la muerte de Jos\u00e9 Miguel Carrera y <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memoriachilena.gob.cl\/602\/w3-article-740.html\">Manuel Rodr\u00edguez<\/a>&#8211; fue evaluada por \u00e9l mismo en un manifiesto dirigido a su pueblo. Parad\u00f3jicamente, su abdicaci\u00f3n al cargo de Director Supremo de Chile el 28 de enero de 1823, uno de los episodios m\u00e1s tristes de su vida, fue la m\u00e1xima expresi\u00f3n de su adhesi\u00f3n a la causa del pa\u00eds, ya que voluntariamente se despoj\u00f3 del poder para evitar una guerra civil, dejando como testimonio una emocionada despedida.
